1783: Laki; Eight months. Changed the weather in Europe. No apology issued.
1963: Surtsey; Built a brand-new island from nothing. Still standing. Still smug.
2010: Eyjafjallajökull; Grounded 100,000 flights. Unpronounceable, possibly on purpose.
2021: Fagradalsfjall; The friendly one. People brought sausages. The lava did not mind.
2023: Litli-Hrútur; The one you just flew over. Filmed by a drone braver than both of us.

05 · Scale

The largest lava flow in Iceland for 230 years. It covered a city’s worth of ground and never once asked for planning permission.

06 · Admission

Iceland, uniquely, tends to let you walk up to fresh lava. This is either deep trust in you or deep confidence in the lava.
